Image of the Week : Church of Saint Paul, Paris

Church of Saint-Paul

I have decided to add a new feature here at My Melange.

Every week, I will select one of my images from my online gallery and share a little story behind it.

This week, the featured image is the Church of Saint-Paul.

And, for this week only, any purchases of this photo will be offered with FREE Shipping!

The church is located in the Marais neighborhood in Paris, which is a funky area on the Right Bank, that has a similar vibe to Greenwich Village in New York City.

We were lucky enough to be staying at the Hotel Sevigne in Paris on this particular visit.  And though the hotel itself is located on the main street of Rue de Rivoli, we were rather high up and the windows were double-glazed, so it was really pretty quiet.

But imagine my surprise, when I opened our window, to find a tiny balcony, with the views of the street down below.  And a small slice of the ornate church directly across from our room.  I especially love the decorative iron balustrade, and the subtle shades of grey captured in the photo.  The dome topped by the cross is like the icing on the cake.

The price of the room, regardless of the street noise was a bargain.  But the view of the church and the photo were priceless.

You can view a larger version of the photo or purchase it in my online shop.

This is a wonderful shot of the church. I have walked the Marais area many times and the Church of St. Paul is indeed photo-worthy. How lucky for you to have a balcony view! This is my first comment on your blog, btw. But I’ve loved it for a good long time. Thanks!

Actually the view is from Rue Saint Antoine, not Rue Saint Paul.

Tim, acutally we are BOTH wrong ;) It was taken from the Rue de Rivoli, and I have updated the post to reflect that. Thanks for calling it to my attention. I always forget that Rivoli is the main street. Because of the same of the church, my mind always thinks Rue Saint-Paul. Merci!

Sure, and I just checked again, it is Rue de Rivoli (although the church is on Rue Saint Antoine, the hotel–and the viewpoint of the picture–is from Rue de Rivoli, since at that point they are the same street, just different sides of the street).

    Cheers!

Hi Robin! What a beautiful photo! I am a sucker for black and white. Back in college that was all I was into, and to this day, most of the pictures on my walls are black and whites :) I love the Marais! I believe that’s the area that has the Picasso museum, correct? Everytime I’ve been in Paris, I’ve wandered through that neighborhood, and wanted to live there. Next time I’m there, I’ll have to stay there. Last time, I stayed near the Eiffel tower, which was great for heading out to lay in the grass and watch the lightshow on the tower.

I just found your blog recently, and I’m glad I did! I’m a huge fan of Italy, France, and photography. I look forward to reading more of your posts, and seeing more of your beautiful photos!

Hi and welcome, J ! So glad you stopped by. Thanks for the compliments on my photos. I love Paris as well (obvious I know!), and yes the Marais is where the Picasso museum is. Look forward to having you come back and contribute to upcoming conversations real soon :)

Lovely photo – I’m quite sure it’s better in your B&W version than it would have been in color!
