I can absorb a lot from guidebooks and the web before I go, more as I'm touring with a guide (who often has his/her own tidbits to share) and on my own too. We recently got back from a week in Tuscany--our third visit--and this time, felt free to simply follow our nose and absorb. A true luxury. But I have to have a solid sense of a place--historical, political, cultural--before I can relax like that. Fascinating article! But what I most want to know is if Craig has something in his mouth or if his tongue is blue/green!

I like to travel both with a guide and on my own. I can absorb a lot from guidebooks and the web before I go, more as I’m touring with a guide (who often has his/her own tidbits to share) and on my own too. Adding day onto the end allows you to have become a little familiar, banish a few fears, and give you a little broader comfort zone. Plus, you have the advantage of being able to go back and see things that you've missed on the tour. What I dislike about independent travelers, however, is our tendency to look down our nose at people who don't make the same options that we do.
