A while back I left a comment about maybe trying the carry on only method next time I traveled to Italy. Well, I did it! Went for two months, September and October with just a backpack, and yes, it can be done easily enough. Though I only used to take a medium-sized suitcase and the backpack, the freedom of walking off the plane at both ends, passing through customs, and then right out the door is wonderful.
