I could not agree more. the point here is that all these reactions are completely knee jerk. They cannot protect the passengers on the plane.

I am also curious if business/first class passengers have to abide by any new rules or is this just going to make economy travel even more inconvenient.

To close, as a fairly frequent international flyer to see how difficult it is for non-citizens to come through passport control in the US airports anyway, it is no wonder that fewer will even attempt this moving forward.

These rules are beyond ridiculous, and if they start using the full body scanner regularly, it will also be very unhealthy. I have already planned quite a few flights, and I would really avoid this scanning routine!
It will only have the result to make airport experience more unpleasant than it is already.
Disrespect for our privacy and restriction of civil liberties are becoming unbearable.

Eleonora, thank you so much for the kind words. I hope the TSA wises up. As you point out, it was bad enough before these new changes! It's hard to imagine anyone wanting to travel to the US with these restrictons! Happy Travels ;)

Thank you Robin for this. I'm glad a travel authority as yourself is taking a stance against this scandalous situation.
The OLD TSA rules were absurd, the new ones are ludicrous. I travel alone to California from Italy with my toddler every year. We have rituals, tricks and secrets to make the 15-hour devastating voyage a little easier. TSA has just shattered about half of them, thanks. And in the name of what, security? Give me a break.

I hope this post will travel around the world and stir up the attention it deserves.

Grazie
Eleonora

Great article, Robin. I couldn't agree with you more (as you know from our exchange on Twitter). I can't say it will stop me from flying, but I will certainly be vocal about my unhappiness, as I think everyone should be--now, before these new rules become fully entrenched. Chris Elliott's column on the 27th was reporting that we would be allowed to have reading materials, at least. Don't know if that's true or just an error in the article. But for God's sake, do they really think people can sit in their seats like good little sheep for an hour with nothing to do but stare at the back of the seat in front of them? And what if it's an emergency that someone has to use the bathroom? Are they really going to be so inhumane as to prevent them? What kind of society do we have that we let people force completely arbitrary rules like these on us? I thought this was a democracy. I haven't heard anyone say they think these rules are a good idea. Not one.

Thanks for your thoughts T. You make good points - many are reasons that I may not only be able not be able to use carry-on anymore. And you are right about the fact that it is a serious problem. One I hope they put a good amount of thought into.

well i live in canada. and it makes me just not want to deal w flying to the states. we have insane line-ups to get on planes here now. and the airlines are enforcing these rules. i plan to travel w a large video camera and a laptop and now couldn't. i can't put expensive equipment like that in my luggage. i mean there is a point where the rules actually make people's lives impossible. i really don't know what to suggest though because there is obviously a serious problem here.

Amelia, while I am sure that at this point in the story, we could both dig up a dozen links to stories- each with slightly different facts- the bigger picture is still that it could have and should have been prevented - and that the silly TSA rules that were put into effect, won't really do anything to keep anyone safer or prevent the same thing from happening. Thanks again for your thoughts. Enjoy your New Year :)
